The Haus der Demokratie und Menschenrechte (house of democracy and human rights) combines the east-berlin citizens movement and the west-berlin human rights movement and makes them work together. It is a central workplace for ideas and actions of citizen movements in Germany and is open to all related initiatives and NGOs.

In December 1989, the house in the Friedrichstraße 165 was given from SED property to the eastern citizen movement of the "Zentralen Runden Tisch" of the DDR. We renamed ourselves into "Haus der Demokratie" (house of democracy). Only ten years later we had to move due to a long argument about property and a political decision by the party property comission and so we moved to Greifswalder Straße 4 in autumn 1999. This movement helped us refresh our image into "Haus der Demokratie und Menschenrechte". Only a thousand metres in front of the Alexanderplatz the new house lies on the edge between Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte and Friedrichshain.

The founding organisations from 1989 and the following groups unify the belief that peoples political self-determination should also take action beyond political parties and party structures.

Also the support for human rights in a broad sense - e.g. the individual freedom, the right of ecological integrity, rights of the poorer 2/3 of the world, the social human rights, and last but not least the right of direct intervention in political processes, unite the organisations and initiatives in the house and relates them to each other.

Civil movements work grassroots democratical and conversational. Their concepts ground on understanding, which means that their social expertise developing through solidarizing people is the most important power fighting against state or private leadership. Their pacifist and conversational ability in political issues roots in the belief that the tools have to correlate to the aims. Furthermore there is a consens within the groups of our house, which states that faschist, dictatorical, sexist and racist ideas are intolerable. Because of these views they emphasize their solidarity with victims of those actions and they focus on working with involved people suffering under social discrimination.

The Haus der Demokratie und Menschenrechte (house of democracy and human rights) wants and will be a ideas workshop and a place for conversation and engagement for human rights and participation in more socal decisionmaking. It is an open space for all necessary counter public spheres in the development of the German and European Union.
